TUFI Chair, Roger Lyons

roger_lyonsRoger Lyons was the General Secretary of the Manufacturing, Science and Finance (MSF) trade union from 1992 and re-elected with 67% of the vote in 1997. When the union merged with the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union (AEEU) to form Amicus (now UNITE) in 2002, he subsequently became one of the Joint General Secretaries.

Lyons' trade union career began in 1966 as a full-time union official for the Association of Supervisory Staff, Executives and Technicians (ASSET) union in the North West of England. ASSET merged with a number of other unions to form the Association of Scientific, Technical and Managerial Staffs (ASTMS) union and Roger became a National Officer in 1970 and Assistant General Secretary in 1987. In 1988, ASTMS merged with the Technical, Administrative and Supervisory Section (TASS) to form MSF.

Lyons was President of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) between September 2003 and September 2004, after which he retired. During this time he visited Israel and Palestine in November 2003 on behalf ot the TUC.

Lyons was a founding member of the Anti-Apartheid Movement and nominated Nelson Mandela for his first international honour as honorary president of University College London (UCL) Union. He also organised the first ever South African Scholarship at a British university (UCL) and was an observer for the European Union in the first free elections in South Africa.
