K. Malakhi wants 'one of its own' as prime minister
By Nir Hasson
In the middle of Labor Party Chairman Amir Peretz's tour of the Kiryat Malakhi market yesterday, a party activist shouted, "Dialena!" - a word in the Moroccan dialect meaning "one of our own." The activist wasn't the only one: Buyers and sellers repeatedly mentioned Peretz's Moroccan origins and the fact that he hails from the southern town of Sderot as the reasons for their support.
"I want a Moroccan, one of ours, in the Knesset," said Kiryat Malakhi resident Shushan Zak, who supported the Likud for 30 years. "Amir helped us in the Histadrut. [Likud chairman Benjamin] Netanyahu screwed us over. I'm finished with the Likud."
"A Sephardi won't ever be prime minister in this country. The Ashkenazim won't let him," one stall owner told Peretz. "Give me the chance," the Labor leader said.
